Sunshine Cottage offers a comprehensive school counseling program based on the special needs of students, families, the school and the community. The program encompasses a broad spectrum of services which include individual and group counseling, parent and teacher consultation, group guidance for students, information and referral services, comprehensive assessments and coordination of all Child Study Teams for current and incoming students.

The purpose of the school counseling program is to facilitate normal growth and development in all students. The curriculum focuses on communication of information and prevention, as well as crisis intervention and remediation. The goal of the program is to facilitate academic, personal, social and career development for all students. The program is designed to assist students in resolving academic, social or personal concerns that interrupt the educational process.

The counselor provides bi-weekly guidance in social skills, self-identity, problem solving, etc., to all students enrolled in elementary through high school grades. Drug awareness, maturation, sex education, career awareness and interviewing skills are topics of interest to students in middle and high school.

The counselor works closely with psychologists and psychiatrists in the community and refers students as needed. Families of students benefit from two parent support groups and numerous activities throughout the year.
