Perhaps the busiest and most energetic little bodies at Sunshine Cottage are those in the Early Childhood Program.

Whether answering questions about what makes shadows, working in the Sunshine garden, or creating a replica of a seashore on the playground, activities immerse young children in spoken and written language to help them develop speech, language and listening skills.

Children in the Early Childhood Department have weekly learning experiences based on a theme. The theme is utilized in language activities, center time, cognitive activities and emergent literacy experiences. Each theme is further experienced by field trips in the San Antonio area.

Each day, the children have a special play time outside known as Play Zones. Children are free to choose from a variety of activities or Zones which are based on a theme. Best of all, the ratio of adults to children is small so that children can have special play partners to facilitate communication with their peers having normal hearing.
