The Elementary Level Program at Sunshine Cottage extends from first grade through upper grades. The emphasis of this phase of the Sunshine Cottage program is on speech and language as well as academic development. Academic subject areas follow the required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills of the Texas Education Agency guidelines.

The elementary students follow a course of study which closely resembles that of a public school setting. The school day is divided into different subjects presented in remarkably creative ways: The children can't help but take part with wordy enthusiasm! Thematically planned units throughout the department allow children to interact and learn across curricular areas.

Each year, older elementary school students are treated to three days at Outdoor School. This well-supervised program allows children to spend time in the out-of-doors learning about out-of-door independent living and survival skills.

Ultimately, the elementary level program prepares hearing impaired students for mainstreaming into public and private schools.
