The
Hearing Aid Loaner Parent Education and Evaluation Program (HALPEEP)
provides opportunities for recently identified children to experience
the newest varieties of hearing aids free of charge, and for parents
to learn more about technological developments and existing treatment
resources.
-
A variety of hearing aids with FM
systems are on the market these days. HALPEEP provides "loaners"
for your child's trial use. You can test from among the
best technologies currently available and learn what system
really works best for your child.
-
You can participate in the loaner
program for a maximum of 18 months, trying different hearing
devices approximately every 3 months (or less if necessary).
-
Throughout the trial period, you and
the Sunshine Cottage habilitation team will observe, evaluate,
and monitor your child's reactions to each loaner hearing
device. As a parent, it is vitally important that you fully
participate in the evaluation and selection of the most
appropriate hearing technology for your child.
Participation in the program means that
your child's hearing loss is identified and that your child's hearing
will be consistently aided. The "loaners" allow parents and the
Sunshine Cottage habilitation team to carefully and thoroughly evaluate
your child's hearing device options without the pressure to make
a hasty decision.
After 18 months (or less) in HALPEEP, and
with guidance from the Sunshine Cottage habilitation team, you will
be able to make informed decisions about your child's hearing technology.
Although Sunshine Cottage does not sell hearing devices, we can
direct you to a local dispensing audiologist or hearing aid dispenser.
(Sunshine Cottage does dispense hearing aids through the Texas Department
of Health's Program for Amplification for Children in Texas (PACT)
for children with Medicaid or those who qualify financially.)
