The
Parent-Infant Program
Sunshine Cottage's Parent-Infant Program
is for parents of children age newborn to three-years-old with hearing
impairment. The program is free
of charge and includes audiological education and management (for
details see
Audiology Services section).
The program is parent-focused and child-driven.
- Because listening is integrated into
the child's total personality through the family's natural daily
routines, parents are recognized and empowered as the individuals
primarily responsible for developing their baby's oral communication
skills.
The program is built around your habilitation
team-you, the parent, an audio communication specialist, and an
audiologist.
- The habilitation team supports your
right to make educated choices for your baby and your family.
The program includes weekly individual
meetings that focus on specific information and techniques relevant
to your particular family. Group sessions provide the opportunity
to learn and share more about parenting. Sessions respect the individual
family's needs and schedule.
The program also provides monthly, early-evening
support groups for sharing, exploring, and helping other parents
through the immediate and long-term impact of hearing impairment
on your child and your family. Childcare is provided for all children
in your family.
The program brings together the region's
brightest specialists. Audio Communication Specialists hold Master's
Degrees in Education of the Hearing Impaired and are skilled in
audio communication principles, practices, and strategies.
