Evaluations

Students with a hearing loss

Prospective Student Evaluation: Every student being considered for enrollment into Sunshine Cottage School receives a full audiological evaluation followed by a comprehensive speech and language evaluation. Bilingual assessments are administered when appropriate. Each child and family is considered for enrollment on an individual basis.

Annual Evaluation for Enrolled Students: Enrolled students with a hearing loss receive an annual speech and language evaluation to assess performance and progress. Evaluations are completed prior to the student’s Child Study Team meeting (CST). CST meetings are held annually to discuss results and information from the student’s team members including the audiologist, teacher, speech pathologist, administrator, parent(s)/guardian(s), and/or other professionals working with the child. Additional evaluations can be conducted throughout the school year as needed.

Students with typical hearing

Prospective Student Evaluation: Every typically hearing student considering enrollment receives a speech and language evaluation. Typically hearing students must receive standard speech and language scores within average range to be enrolled at Sunshine Cottage. Students with a hearing loss benefit from the speech and language models provided by typically hearing students in the classroom.

Parent Infant Program

Children enrolled in the Parent Infant Program have the option to receive a speech and language evaluation prior to exiting the program at three years old. Speech-language pathologists are available to consult with families and advisors in the Parent Infant program upon request.
